Mind Like Water
Mind Like Water is a body of work that illustrates the profound relationship between humanity and the ocean, from the perspective of our shared vulnerability. This project was photographed around coastal Cornwall, spanning from the autumn of 2024 until present day.
The community in these images include friends and family who are united in their love of the ocean. I made this work to mirror the feelings of relief and subliminal calm that overcomes me when I am immersed in the ocean. Exploring themes of human connections to the sea, intimate and immersive compositions are utilised to inspire a sense of emotional resonance; I focus on interactions between the human form and water’s movement.
The water feels to me like a leveller, where all people are equal. It is a place to feel safe and escape the pervading judgements on body image and the social pressures that fill our everyday lives. This work shows the sea as a giver of joy and freedom.
Ultimately, the project reminds viewers that just like the sea, we are never fixed — always shifting, deepening, and reflecting light in unexpected ways. It teaches us to have a mind like water: calm, fluid, and reflective.
